The 2026 European Junior Swimming Championships in Munich, Germany, have reached the halfway point, with Day Four Prelims offering a lighter schedule compared to previous days. This means a packed lineup of finals and semi-finals tonight, with several standout performances emerging from the morning session.
One of the most impressive displays came from Neutral Athlete Kira Manokhina, who shattered the 55-second barrier in the girls' 100m freestyle, clocking an incredible 54.07. This time not only secured her the top seed but also provided her with a substantial lead over her competitors. Hanna Capron of Great Britain claimed the second spot with a time of 55.03, while Spain's Irene Ciercoles and Lithuania's Ieva Jurkunaite closely followed with 55.29 and 55.35, respectively.
Manokhina's performance is particularly noteworthy, as she also claimed a bronze medal in the 50m freestyle the previous night, finishing behind Great Britain's Theodora Taylor. Ciercoles and Manokhina's morning outings in the 50m freestyle further solidified their presence in the competition.
Among the other 100m freestyle swimmers, Italy's Alessandra Mao, just 15 years old, impressed with a 9th-seed time of 55.72. Mao has previously achieved a time of 54.84, which earned her 6th place at last year's World Junior Championships. Germany's Linda Roth, who already claimed gold in the 200m freestyle, showcased her versatility with a 55.62 clocking, securing the 8th seed.
In the boys' 400m IM, Belgium's Simon Laviolette led the pack with a time of 4:23.35, aiming to upgrade his bronze medal from the 200m IM. However, he'll face stiff competition from Neutral Athlete Denis Piataikin and Romania's Matei-Cristian State, who posted times of 4:23.70 and 4:24.09, respectively. State, in particular, is determined to continue Romania's win streak in this event, aiming to surpass Robert Badea's gold medal-winning time from last year.
Russia's Piataikin has also never dipped below the 4:20 barrier, carrying a personal best of 4:21.29 into the competition. Hungary's Vivien Jackl, who secured a silver medal in the girls' 1500m freestyle, is now focusing on the 200m butterfly, notching a top-performing time of 2:12.95. Fokina, who claimed a silver medal in the girls' 100m butterfly sprint, is also the reigning European Junior Championships bronze medalist in the 200m butterfly. While Jackl seeks her first podium in this event, she owns a personal best of 2:10.36, which would have earned her the silver last year.
In the mixed medley relay, Italy emerged victorious with a time of 3:51.53, securing lane four for tonight's final. Great Britain followed closely behind with a time of 3:52.54, while the Neutral Athletes rounded out the top three with 3:53.02. Interestingly, Sweden and Israel tied for 9th place, both posting a time of 3:55.74.
